Pelosi Announces Gas Price Hearings

 SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said today there will be a series of congressional hearings on soaring fuel prices, as her San Francisco constituents suffer the highest rates in the country.
Pelosi said she is looking for a package of proposals this summer that will make July 4th “Energy Independence Day."
Meanwhile, a Senate committee has approved a plan to increase fuel efficiency standards to an average of 35 miles per gallon by 2020. The measure, passed on a voice vote, would raise the nationwide fleet fuel economy average by about 40 percent compared with the current levels of 25 miles-per-gallon. It would also increase standards by four percent a year from 2020 through 2030.
